The United States Department of Homeland Security utilizes an online system known as the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) to track the records of Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-certified schools, F-1 and M-1 visa students, U.S. Department of State-designated Exchange Visitor Program sponsors, and J-1 visa Exchange Visitor Program students.
SEVIS is an essential means for the Department of Homeland Security to preserve national security while at the same time promoting the legal entrance of numerous of F, M, and J visa students that want to come to the United States for educational and cultural purposes.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, SEVIS allows Optimus Language School, a SEVP-certified school, to issue I-20 forms to eligible nonimmigrants so that they can obtain the appropriate visa status while enrolled at the school, to fulfill the school’s legal reporting responsibility regarding student addresses, courses of study, enrollment, employment and compliance with the terms of the student status, and to transfer the student SEVIS records to other institutions.
When a student applies to Optimus Language School, they must pay the SEVIS fee which goes along with the other application and tuition fees*. Below is a table provided by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement that outlines the different costs for the SEVIS fee depending on the student’s visa status.
