What Happens During the First Week?
 

The first week of ESL class at AELS is all about helping students adjust, feel comfortable, and get excited about learning English. New students are greeted with a warm orientation that covers important topics such as school policies, class expectations, and tips for success. Students also take a placement test to ensure they are placed in the correct level, giving them the best chance to thrive in a class that matches their current English skills.

 

Once classes begin, students are introduced to the fundamentals of reading, writing, speaking, and listening in English through engaging lessons, group activities, and real-world applications. Instructors focus on building a strong foundation while encouraging participation and interaction among classmates. This is also the perfect time to start forming friendships, practicing conversational English, and becoming part of the AELS community.

One of the most important goals during the first week is to help students feel confident using English both inside and outside the classroom. Through hands-on learning activities and a small class size—only up to 8 students per class—every student has the opportunity to actively participate and receive personalized attention from their teacher. The first week sets a supportive tone that helps students feel comfortable taking risks, asking questions, and growing their skills.
