Choosing between “in” and “on” can be confusing for English learners, but once you understand the patterns, it becomes much easier to use them correctly. Whether you're preparing for the TOEFL, practicing conversation skills, or studying for your U.S. citizenship test, mastering prepositions is an important part of fluency.
When to Use “In”
We use “in” to describe something that is enclosed or surrounded by boundaries. Think of it as being inside a space. Here are some common uses of “in”:
Places or locations: in a room, in a car, in the house
Geographic areas: in California, in Los Angeles, in the United States
Water: in the ocean, in the pool
Time: in July, in 2025, in the morning
Groups or categories: in a team, in a class, in that category
If something feels like it’s contained or surrounded, “in” is usually the right choice.
When to Use “On”
We use “on” when something is resting on a surface or attached to something. Think of it as being on top of or touching a surface. Here are some examples:
Surfaces: on the table, on the wall, on the floor
Transportation: on the bus, on the train, on a plane
Technology: on the website, on Instagram, on TV
Dates and days: on Monday, on May 19
Streets and floors: on Main Street, on the third floor
If something is lying flat or physically in contact with a surface, “on” is the better choice.
Common Expressions and Exceptions
Some expressions don’t follow the usual patterns:
“In bed” vs. “on the bed”: You sleep in bed, but a book lies on the bed.
“On time” vs. “in time”: On time means punctual. In time means not too late.
Transportation: Use in for small vehicles like cars and taxis. Use on for larger ones like buses, planes, or boats.
Here are a few example sentences:
She lives in Orange County, but works on Sunset Boulevard.
We’ll meet on Friday, but the conference is in December.
The phone is in my bag.
The keys are on the counter.
