3 English Idioms Every Learner Should Know: At a Glance, By the Book & No Brainer

Why Idioms Matter in Everyday English

If you've ever heard a native English speaker say something like "that's a no brainer!" and wondered what they meant, you're not alone. Idioms are expressions whose meanings can't be understood just from the individual words — and they're used constantly in American English.

At American English Language School (AELS), we believe that learning idioms is one of the fastest ways to sound more natural and confident in English. This week, we're featuring three idioms that come up in everyday conversations at work, school, and in daily life.

1. At a Glance

Meaning: To understand or take in information very quickly, with just one look.

Example: "At a glance, I could tell the restaurant was too crowded for us to get a table quickly."

This idiom is perfect for situations where you need to describe quick observations or first impressions. You'll hear it often in professional settings and everyday conversations.

2. By the Book

Meaning: To do something strictly following the rules or official procedures, without taking shortcuts.

Example: "Our teacher always does things by the book — we have to follow every grammar rule exactly."

This is a very common idiom in workplace environments. When a colleague or boss says they want something done "by the book," they mean they want it done correctly and officially.

3. No Brainer

Meaning: A decision or situation that is so obvious it requires no thinking at all.

Example: "Choosing AELS for your English education is a no brainer — we offer flexible schedules, experienced teachers, and F-1 visa support."

You'll hear this idiom used all the time in casual conversation when someone is making an obvious or easy choice.
