Transferring your F-1 student visa to a new school can feel complicated, but it does not have to be. At AELS Irvine, we help international students navigate the SEVIS transfer process with confidence and clarity.
When you move from one SEVP-certified school to another, your SEVIS record must be transferred to the new school. This is called an F-1 transfer. Your current school releases your SEVIS record, and your new school takes over as your Designated School Official (DSO). During this process, your F-1 status remains valid as long as you follow the correct steps and timeline.
First, notify your current school that you plan to transfer and agree on a transfer release date. Make sure you have your new school acceptance letter and I-20 ready. Once your SEVIS record is released, you must report to your new school within 15 days of your program start date. Missing this deadline can put your F-1 status at risk.
You will also need to update your local address with your new DSO and ensure your new I-20 reflects the correct program dates. Keeping organized records of every step is essential.
Many students run into trouble by waiting too long to start the process, or by not communicating clearly with both their old and new schools. Others forget to update USCIS or assume the transfer happens automatically. It does not. Taking a proactive approach and asking questions early makes all the difference.
At AELS, we understand that visa processes are stressful, especially when English is not your first language. Our team is experienced in working with F-1 students and can help you understand exactly what is required at each stage. Our small-group English classes also help you build the communication skills needed to confidently work through official processes, job interviews, and everyday life in Southern California.
Whether you are transferring to AELS or already a student with questions about your visa status, we are here to help. Reach out to us today to speak with someone who understands the process and cares about your success.
