Most people preparing for a change of immigration status focus on the paperwork, the fees, and the wait times. What they often overlook is this: the entire process happens in English — and that matters more than many applicants expect.
At AELS Fullerton, we work with students who are navigating change of status every semester. Here is what we have learned about how English skills can make or break the experience.
The biggest reason is simple: an F-1 student visa allows you to study full-time at a SEVP-approved school legally and without worry. On a tourist or B-2 visa, you are technically limited in how much studying you can do. Changing to F-1 removes that restriction and gives you legal authorization to focus entirely on your English education.
An F-1 visa also gives you stability. Instead of leaving the country every few months or worrying about visa extensions, you have a clear, defined status tied to your enrollment and academic progress. You know exactly where you stand.
For many of our students, the F-1 also opens a path to Optional Practical Training (OPT) later on, which can allow work experience related to your field of study. The F-1 is not just a student visa — it is a foundation for your future in the United States.
Changing your immigration status from inside the United States — without leaving — is called a Change of Status. Here is a basic overview of the steps:
First, choose your school. You must be accepted by a SEVP-certified institution, which will issue you an I-20 form. AELS is a SEVP-certified English language school, and our admissions team walks you through enrollment from the very first step.
Second, file Form I-539 (Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status) with USCIS. This is the official form for changing your status from within the US. You will need your current visa information, your I-20 from AELS, passport photos, and the filing fee.
Third, wait for processing. USCIS processing times vary, but many applicants receive a decision within a few months. You can check your case status online throughout the process.
Fourth, once approved, report to your DSO (Designated School Official) at AELS and begin your program. Your new F-1 status is tied to maintaining enrollment and making satisfactory academic progress — both of which our team helps you track.
Starting something new in a language that is not your first can feel overwhelming. That is why our instructors at AELS Fullerton work with students at every level — from complete beginners to advanced speakers. We have helped students from all over the world navigate the transition to F-1 status and build the English confidence they need to thrive.
Whether you are just exploring the idea or ready to enroll, we are here to answer your questions and help you get started.
