You finally have your F-1 visa and you're settled into your new life as an international student — but now you're wondering: Can I work? How do I get a Social Security Number? These are some of the most common questions we hear from students at AELS Irvine, and the answers are simpler than you might think.
As an F-1 student, you are allowed to work on campus without needing special work authorization from USCIS. This means you can work at your school, in the school cafeteria, library, or any department on campus — up to 20 hours per week while classes are in session, and full-time during school breaks.
This is one of the most accessible ways for international students to earn income while studying in the United States. You do not need to file any special forms or wait for government approval — your F-1 status alone grants you this right.
To be paid for on-campus work, you will need a Social Security Number (SSN). Here is how to get one:
Step 1 — Get a job offer letter. Your employer (the school or campus department) must provide a signed letter confirming your job offer, your start date, and your work hours.
Step 2 — Get a letter from your DSO. Your Designated School Official (DSO) must write a letter confirming your F-1 status, your enrollment, and your eligibility to work on campus.
Step 3 — Visit your local Social Security Administration (SSA) office. Bring your passport, F-1 visa, I-94 record, I-20, employer letter, and DSO letter. The SSA will review your documents and mail your Social Security card within 2–4 weeks.
Step 4 — Start working! Once you receive your SSN, you are ready to begin earning legally on campus.
Off-campus work as an F-1 student requires special authorization — either Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or Optional Practical Training (OPT). These programs are tied to your field of study and have their own application process. Working off-campus without authorization is a serious visa violation, so always check with your DSO first.
