Your F-1 Change of Status Was Approved -- Now What?

Getting that approval notice for your F-1 change of status is an exciting moment -- but it can also feel overwhelming. What do you do next? What are your new responsibilities? What happens if you make a mistake?

At AELS Los Angeles, we work with international students navigating exactly this transition every day. Here is a clear, step-by-step breakdown of what to expect after your F-1 approval.

Step 1: Confirm Your New I-20

Your I-20 is your most important document as an F-1 student. After your change of status is approved, contact your Designated School Official (DSO) right away to confirm your new I-20 is issued with the correct start date and program information. Keep this document safe -- you will need it at every major step of your student journey.

Step 2: Enroll Full-Time

F-1 status requires you to be enrolled full-time at your designated school. For most programs this means at least 18 hours per week. Dropping below full-time enrollment without prior authorization from your DSO can put your status at risk, so always communicate any schedule changes early.

Step 3: Understand the Travel Restriction

This surprises many students: if you changed your status inside the United States, you cannot simply travel abroad and return on your F-1 visa. Your passport still has your old visa stamp. To re-enter the U.S. as an F-1 student after traveling internationally, you will need to apply for a new F-1 visa stamp at a U.S. embassy or consulate abroad.

Until you are ready to do that, it is safest to remain in the United States.

Step 4: Learn Your Work Authorization Rules

As an F-1 student, you are allowed to work on campus up to 20 hours per week while school is in session -- and full-time during official breaks. Off-campus work requires separate authorization (CPT or OPT), which has its own eligibility requirements and timelines. Do not work off campus without proper authorization, as this can jeopardize your status.

Step 5: Keep Your English Skills Strong

Maintaining your F-1 status is not just about paperwork -- it is about succeeding in your academic program. Strong English skills make everything easier: understanding your instructors, participating in class, speaking with your DSO, and building relationships in your new environment.

At AELS Los Angeles, our small-group English classes are designed for exactly this stage of your journey. Whether you need to strengthen your academic English, build conversation confidence, or prepare for the TOEFL, our team is here to support you every step of the way.

You Do Not Have to Figure It Out Alone

The transition to F-1 student status comes with a learning curve -- but it does not have to be stressful. Understanding your responsibilities early puts you in control of your future in the U.S.
