Even advanced English learners make small grammar slips—the kind that can change your meaning or quietly undercut your confidence. The good news is that most are simple to fix once you can spot them. At AELS Los Angeles, here are five of the most common mistakes we see, and how to master each one.
"I lived in Los Angeles for five years" suggests you no longer do. "I have lived in Los Angeles for five years" means you still do. Use the present perfect for actions that started in the past and continue to now.
It's easy to match the verb to the nearest noun instead of the true subject. "The list of items are on the desk" should be "The list of items is on the desk"—the subject is list, not items.
Many languages don't use articles, so they're easy to drop or misuse. Use a/an for something general ("I need a pen") and the for something specific ("Please pass the pen on the table").
A classic trip-up. Use in for months and years ("in June"), on for days and dates ("on Monday"), and at for specific times ("at 3:00").
Joining two complete thoughts with just a comma creates a run-on: "I study every day, my English is improving." Fix it with a period or a connecting word: "I study every day, so my English is improving."
Grammar sticks fastest when you practice it in real conversation, not just on worksheets. In our small-group ESL classes in Los Angeles, you get the time and feedback to catch these patterns and correct them naturally—so they show up correctly when you speak and write. Whether you're preparing for work, school, or daily life, our supportive instructors meet you at your level.
