Thinking about switching to an English language school but worried about your F-1 status? Transferring is more straightforward than most students expect - and AELS Irvine can guide you through every step.
An F-1 "transfer" does not cancel your visa or your student status. It simply moves your SEVIS record from your current SEVP-certified school to a new one. The best part: you keep the same SEVIS ID number, so you do not need to pay the SEVIS I-901 fee again.
The key milestone is the transfer release date - the day control of your SEVIS record passes from your current school's Designated School Official (DSO) to your new school's DSO. Until that date, you stay enrolled and maintain status at your current school.
First, apply and receive written confirmation of acceptance. Our admissions team makes this simple, and our small-group ESL classes welcome learners at every level - from beginners to professionals polishing their conversation skills.
Bring your AELS acceptance letter to your current DSO and ask them to set a transfer release date in SEVIS. You choose this date together with your current school. Remember: your new program should begin at the next available session, and generally no more than five months after your current program end date.
On the release date, AELS gains access to your SEVIS record and issues your new Form I-20. Review it carefully to confirm your name, program, and start date are correct.
After your program begins, you must contact your AELS DSO and register for classes within 15 days of the program start date listed on your new I-20. Reporting on time is what keeps your F-1 status active - so mark your calendar.
AELS is SEVP-certified and authorized to issue I-20s, so your transfer stays fully compliant. Beyond the paperwork, students choose our Irvine campus for focused, conversation-based instruction, supportive teachers, and a welcoming community of international learners. Our DSOs are here to answer your questions at every stage.
Every student's situation is a little different, so always confirm the details with your current and future DSO before setting your release date.
