Your F-1 Change of Status Was Approved: Next Steps for Irvine Students

You opened the envelope from USCIS, and the answer is finally yes: your change of status from B-1/B-2 to F-1 was approved. After months of waiting, it is tempting to relax. But the first few weeks after approval are when good habits protect your new status, so here is what to do next.

If you are still waiting on a decision, start with our guide Waiting on Your F-1 Change of Status. For the latest on the court case over the new fixed-date rule, see The September Deadline Is On Hold.

1. Read your approval notice carefully

Your approval comes on Form I-797A. The bottom part of that notice is your new I-94 record, and it should show F-1 status. Check that your name, date of birth and status are correct, and keep the original in a safe place with your passport and I-20. According to Study in the States, the change to F-1 takes effect on the date USCIS decides your case.

2. Contact the AELS office right away

Bring or email a copy of your approval notice to our Designated School Official (DSO). We need it to update your SEVIS record and confirm your program start date. Please do not wait until the first day of class.

3. Know your start date

You may not take classes while you are still in B-1/B-2 status, and that does not change until the approval arrives. If your approval comes after your I-20 start date, do not worry. Study in the States says your DSO can defer your start to the next session, and you do not need to file another application with USCIS.

4. Study full time, every session

As an F-1 language student, you must attend a full course of study, which means at least 18 hours of class per week. Good attendance is not just about grades. It is part of keeping your status. If you are sick or have an emergency, talk to the office before you miss classes.

5. Travel and work: slow down

A change of status approval is not a visa. If you leave the United States, you will need an F-1 visa from a U.S. consulate to come back as a student, so talk to your DSO before booking any trip. F-1 students also cannot work off campus. Ask us before you accept any job.

6. Keep your information up to date

Tell the AELS office within 10 days if you move or change your phone number or email. Keep your passport valid, and keep copies of your I-20, I-797A and I-94 together.
